I had promised myself that when Kindles become as cheap as 100 euros, I would get myself one. And even though this is the summer we are supposed to economize, the summer when my country was on the verge of bankruptcy not once but twice, I went ahead and ordered it. It took just three days to arrive from Seattle (or wherever Amazon storage rooms are) to Athens and about five days from Athens to Larissa. But Friday afternoon it was here and I was once more excited as kid. It was like Christmas in the middle of the summer!
Predictably enough for an obsessive bibliophile like myself I had downloaded , exchanged, bought enough e-books to last me for a life, even before the Kindle had arrived. It took a very short while to learn how to work with it. It is one of the few times when all the publicity hype is true and it is a marvelous piece of equipment to work with it. Very easy to buy books from amazon, I also suggest you download Calibre which is an excellent little piece of software to help you organize your books and articles. PDFs are readable but they aren’t my favourite kind of file because the fonts come out very small. So we all set for a holiday full of reading without the extra weight.
So here are the pros:
-Light, light, super light. And cool. Here in Greece they are still a novelty and people are looking at you somewhat strangely when you read one of those on the queue to pay the electricity bill. But on second thoughts people look at you strangely when you read a conventional book as well.
-Quantity. Never again worry if the book you took with you on your holiday is not what you had hoped for. I’m not sure if it can really hold 3,500 books (I very much doubt it if they are books like the Infinite Jest with its 1600 pages) but I’m sure you’ll never be short of books. Ever.
– Readability. The digital ink is indeed very readable and comfortable for the eyes. It doesn’t feel like reading from a screen at all.
– Connectivity. In case you are short of any other devices and you desperately need your daily dose of internet it also works as a simple tablet, with a black and white screen, however. But you would have to be desperate, I repeat.
And the cons?
Well, I have to admit there are some. First of all after years of using these simple devices called books, you know the ones with the paper pages, I just can’t get over the feeling I don’t know whereabouts in the book I am. OK, there is a note that says, 15% or 56% but this matters little when you actually want to see how many pages to the end of the chapter so you can turn the light off. Not to mention the fact that reading the (infamous) Infinite Jest, I thought there was something seriously wrong with my Kindle cause I was stuck to two percent for days. I read and I read and still 2 percent. Then I decided to check the number of pages. Then I relaxed. So you don’t actually get the feel of the book. Is it big? Is it thin? Are chapters few and sparse? Are they one-page-long? That’s a drawback to me.
But most of all, as I said before, Kindles are excellent for some kind of books, and documents, for travelling and all but they will never be good enough for any kind of illustrated book. Children’s books? Forget them. Actually what prompted me to finish this post today was reading about one Taschen book that I’ve just seen and started drooling for!
My friend Ken mentioned somewhere in FB that he wouldn’t change his paperbacks with an e-book because books are really great conversation starters. This journalist seems to agree as well. I must admit too, that I would terribly miss this diversity if everyone read e-books. (From the FlickR group Reading in public)
I don’t regret buying it of course. If nothing else, my bag is much lighter these days. People argue whether its strong point is the battery (which really lasts very loooooong) or its screen which is very relaxing. In my opinion its strong point is convenience. The fact you carry with you so many books any time and you can refer back to them and you can access your notes easily. But of course what this does to our memory in the long term is another issue and maybe another blogpost. For the moment I’ll just try to find some space for the books I brought back from my parents’ house.

Your post definitely whetted my appetite for e-reading. I’ve been thinking about getting Kindle as well, but what hindered me from getting one, apart from the price, of course, is that since I started tweeting etc. I stopped reading real books, because I spend all the time online! Maybe an e-reader will make me read again. Especially if, as you say, there’s this option for making desperate internet addicts a bit less desperate:-)

I bought my kindle in October, after going to the Language show in London and being bitten by the bug. I have never read as many books in my life! I have a great selection of different styles. I don’t mind trying something new- even if I would have baulked at buying it as a paperback.I took it on holiday with more than enough material to keep me entertained for days!
I still buy books which I need for reference, but I have cut down on the amount of storage I need and my house looks much tidier for it.
Enjoy reading- it really doesn’t matter whether you use a book or an e-book.

Η παρατήρηση για τις σελίδες είναι και δικός μου προβληματισμός. Όταν αρχίζω ένα βιβλίο πάντα βλέπω πόσες σελίδες έχει και πότε φτάνω στη μέση.
Επίσης, ερώτηση: Πώς σου φαίνεται το Infinite Jest?

Ερώτηση 1η: γιατί το παραγγείλατε από το αμερικάνικο amazon και όχι από το αγγλικό? ή μήπως κατάλαβα λάθος?? 2η ερώτηση: πόσο ήταν το τελικό κόστος? μόνο 100€?! μαζί με τα μεταφορικά και τους φόρους, κλπ κλπ??!! σας παρακαλώ απαντήστε μου γιατί ενδιαφέρομαι εδώ και καιρό να το αγοράσω κι εγώ!! 🙂 κατά τα άλλα, το άρθρο σας είναι κατατοπιστικότατο και εξάλειψε όσους ενδοιασμούς είχα για την αγορά του!!

@Don’t Ever Read Me : To IJ δεν το έχω τελειώσει ακόμη έχω φτάσει αισίως στο δέκα τοις εκατό του βιβλίου. Είναι ένα τεράστιο βιβλίο με όλες τις έννοιες, ένα βιβλίο-άσκηση το οποίο σου δίνει μεγάλη χαρά για κάθε σελίδα που καταφέρνεις να καταλάβεις.Θα επανέλθω.

@Ελένη: Το αγγλικό Άμαζον δεν κάνει (ακόμη) αποστολές Κιντλ στην Ελλάδα. Μαζί με τα μεταφορικά και τον εκτελωνισμό το κόστος ήταν 147 ευρώ.

τα e-readers ειναι σπουδαια τεχνολογικα επιτευγματα αλλα δεν μπορουν να αντικαταστησουν τα παραδοσιακα χαρτινα βιβλια…ειναι σαν να συγκρινεις ενα σπανιο δισκο βινυλιου που εχεις στη συλλογη σου με ενα φακελο με mp3 που εχεις στον υπολογιστη..το καθε βιβλιο με το εξωφυλλο του και το μεγεθος του κοσμει με το δικο του τροπο τη βιβλιοθηκη σου…βεβαια,το kindle μπορει να χωρεσει εκατονταδες βιβλια και μπορει ν’αποδειχτει βολικο σε ορισμενες περιπτωσεις αλλα δεν θα το αγοραζα αν κι εχω μπει συχνα στον πειρασμο…ειδικα για μενα που κραταω σημειωσεις και υπογραμμιζω συχνα δεν θα με βολευε

Με γεια κι από εμένα. Είχα κι εγώ την επιθυμία να αποκτήσω ένα Kindle ή παρόμοιο μηχανηματάκι. Με δελέαζε η ιδέα ότι θα είχα χίλια βιβλία σε μέγεθος ενός. Τελικά σκέφτηκα ότι όποτε βγαίνω έξω και διαβάζω δε χρειάζομαι πάνω από 2-3 βιβλία, ενώ συνήθως κουβαλάω ένα. Στις διακοπές μου επίσης βάζω στις αποσκευές 5-6 βιβλία και είμαι ok. Ποτέ δε μου χρειάστηκαν 1.000 βιβλία. Έτσι, αποφάσισα να μην πάρω Kindle.
Βέβαια υπάρχουν αυτοί που λένε πρέπει να έχουμε ένα ebook reader γιατί το χάρτινο βιβλίο πεθαίνει και γιατί όλοι θα αγοράζουμε ψηφιακά βιβλία. Εγώ βλέπω το αντίθετο: για την ώρα οι τίτλοι που βγαίνουν σε ψηφιακά βιβλία δεν καλύπτουν τις ανάγκες μου. (Υπάρχει π.χ. ο Ντανίλο Κις, ο Μίλοραντ Πάβιτς και ο Μπρούνο Σουλτς σε epub και μάλιστα μεταφρασμένοι στα ελληνικά;) Από την άλλη δεν μπορώ να νιώθω ότι έχω στην ιδιοκτησία μου ένα βιβλίο όταν δεν μπορώ να το πιάσω ή να το μυρίσω. Έχω σωματική σχέση με την ανάγνωση. Προτιμώ να είναι γεμάτη η βιβλιοθήκη μου. Εξάλλου το χάρτινο βιβλίο δε χρειάζεται ρεύμα για να το διαβάσεις.

Γενικά συμφωνώ με αυτά που λέτε. Κι εγώ έχω σωματική σχέση με τα βιβλία μου και θέλω να αποτελούν μέρος της ζωής μου.
Επίσης όπως σωστά αναφέρετε τα ηλεκτρονικά βιβλία στα ελληνικά είναι εξαιρετικά περιορισμένα -ακόμη. Αυτό θα αλλάξει.
Νομίζω ότι εξήγησα όμως ότι για κάποιες περιπτώσεις είναι φοβερά βολικό το ηλεκτρονικό βιβλίο.
Για τα συνολικά έξοδα, εγώ έδωσα 147 ευρώ στα οποία συμπεριλαμβάνεται το Κιντλ, τα μεταφορικά και τα έξοδα εκτελωνισμού για το μοντέλο 3G. Όμως αυτή η πληροφορία είναι άχρηστη πλέον εφόσον εδώ και λίγες μέρες η Άμαζον κυκλοφόρησε 3 διαφορετικές εκδόσεις κιντλ και αν δεν κάνω λάθος υπάρχει και μια με λιγότερο από 100 δολάρια. Το οικονομικό δεν είναι το θέμα.
Όπως εξήγησα παραπάνω, λογοτεχνία αποκλείεται να χρειαστεί να διαβάσω σε μηχάνημα. Ποτέ δε χρειάστηκε όταν είμαι μακριά από το σπίτι να κουβαλάω πάνω από 2-3 λογοτεχνικά βιβλία.
Για τη δουλειά μου πήρα το καλοκαίρι ένα netbook όπου έχω βάλει ό,τι βιβλίο μπορεί να χρειαστώ και το 1 κιλό βάρους δε με χαλάει, εξάλλου …ειναι υπολογιστής: για τη δουλειά χρειάζομαι και βιβλία, αλλά και εφαρμογές γραφείου και διαδίκτυο.
Και έχει περισσότερη χωρητικότητα από οποιοδήποτε tablet: εκεί που τα tablet σταματάνε στα 64Gb, εγώ έχω βάλει σκληρό 500Gb.

Κοίτα, κατά τη γνώμη μου όλα αυτά τα τεχνολογικά εργαλεία που χρησιμοποιούμε “μαρτυράνε” ένα σωρό πληροφορίες για μας. Όταν μπαίνεις στο διαδίκτυο και εκτίθεσαι το γνωρίζεις αυτό ή θα πρεπε να το γνωρίζεις.
Μερικοί από μας έχουμε την τάση να εκθέτουμε τον εαυτό μας ακόμη περισσότερο, είτε γράφοντας μπλογκ, είτε γράφοντας στο τουίτερ και είτε ανεβάζοντας φωτογραφίες μας κοκ.
Τώρα τί ακριβώς θα κάνει η άμαζον την πληροφορία ότι διαβάζω και ξαναδιαβάζω Πίντσον και Χένρι Μίλλερ, δε γνωρίζω. Ελπίζω κάτι χρήσιμο!
